My grandmother had an incredible garden at her home in the Lake Tahoe area. An area notoriously difficult to garden in due to it’s short season and brutal winters. She had the most beautiful delphiniums you’ve ever seen – I even remember someone walking by asking permission to take pictures of her garden (truly, the best compliment a gardener can ever receive). What those people didn’t realize, though, was that she also had little plastic pink flowers tucked at the base of these towering delphiniums which added that special ‘punch’ a beautiful garden has. Did it take away from these people’s experience? Not at all. Did it make gardening any easier for my old grandmother? Absolutely.
A simple rule of thumb? If you think it looks realistic, and is pretty, then by all means tuck it in your garden. HOWEVER…..pay attention. Sun fades plastic. And as soon as that pretty pink color fades to a sickly shade of salmon, the whole world will be on to your tricks and laugh at you behind your back.
